Star stitch hat

This is the written pattern for the Star Stitch hat. I hope you find it easy to follow and you'll love it as much as I do. Happy crocheting!

Materials:

4 mm crochet hook

100 % cotton yarn or the yarn that you prefer. 1 skein in each color. 

scissors , darning needle

Note: ch 2 at the beginning of each round will not count as stitch.

The size is for small - medium women head. To make it larger  add an extra round of increases and to make it smaller skip one or two rounds of increase. The brim is only for this size.

The crown of the hat:

Begin with a magic ring, ch 2, 12 DC in the ring

Round 1: ch 2, 2 DC in each stitch around, sl st to 1st Dc - 24 sts

Round 2: ch 2, * 2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next * , repeat from * to * , sl st to 1st DC - 36 sts

Round 3: ch 2, * 2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next 2 sts * , rep from * to * , sl st to 1st DC - 48 sts

Round 4: ch 2, * 2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next 3 sts * , rep from * to * , sl st to 1st DC - 60 sts

Round 5: ch 2, * 2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next 4 sts *,  rep from * to * , sl st to 1st DC -72 sts

Round 6: ch 2, * 2 DC in first st, 1 DC in next 5 sts *, rep from * to * , sl st to 1st DC - 84 sts

The body of the hat:

Round 1: Change color 

For the star you have to have 6 loops on your hook so the first one at each round will be like this:

chain 3 (1 loop on hook) , put the hook in 2nd ch from hook and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), repeat for the 3rd ch from hook ( 3 loops on hook) , take one loop from the same st as ch 3 ( 4 loops on hook) and the last two should be from the next 2 sts ( 6 loops on hook). Pull trough all of them and ch 1. That's your first half star and the "eye" of the star. 

From now on until the end of the round it's always the same:

Take 1 loop from the eye of the star ( 2 loops on  hook) , the next one is in between the last 2 loops from previous star ( 3 loops on hook) , the next one is in the same st as last 2 loops ( 4 loops on hook) and take 2 more loops from the next 2 sts ( 6 loops on hook) . Pull trough all and ch 1. Repeat until the end of round. 

Last star of the round: take 5 loops on hook as usual and the last loop should be from the base of ch 3 / fist ch (at the bottom, not top) . Sl st to first st. If you do it this way the seam will not be so noticeable. 

Round 2:

To complete the star stitch we have to make a round of SC

Ch 1, 2 SC in every eye of the previous round. Sl st to first SC.

You should have 42 stars.

Make 7 rows of complete stars ( 14 in total)

The brim : change color 

You have two options for the brim :

Option A : even brim all around

or Option B : slightly larger brim on front:

Option A:

Round 1: SC all around

Round 2: increase every 2 sts

Round 3: repeat round 1

Round 4: increase every 4 sts

Round 5: repeat round 1, sl st to fist SC. FO and weave in ends.

Option B:

Round 1: SC all around

Round 2: increase every 2 sts

Round 3: SC next 28 sts, HDC next 10 sts, DC next 36 sts, HDC next 10 sts, SC next 28 sts, sl st to fist SC. FO and weave in ends.

Abbreviations: US terms

SC - single crochet

DC - double crochet

HDC - half double crochet

sl st - slip stitch

ch - chain

FO - fasten off
